The Zenbook 14 Q409A is, indubitably, one of Asus' best laptops due to its 11-hour battery runtime, striking display, massive touchpad, and more.

Keep in mind that the average laptop under $1,000 typically lasts only eight hours on a charge. However, according to our testing, the Zenbook 14 Q409A managed to last a whopping 10 hours and 52 minutes. As such, you can rest assured that you don't have to lug around a charging brick for this laptop while you're at work or school.

And can we talk about its display? It has a 2.8K panel with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and thanks to the fact that it's an OLED screen, it's colorful and a total visual treat. Adding to the cherry on top, it's super responsive, thanks to its 90Hz refresh rate.

Best Performance

We reviewed the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16, and we were blown away by its top-of-the-line performance when we put it through our series of gaming benchmarks. Its graphics are top notch, too, thanks to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 GPU. Games looked superb on the ROG Zephyrus M16 due to the bright, 16-inch, 2560 x 1600-pixel display that has a 165Hz refresh rate.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 retails for about $1,900 for a configuration with an Intel Core i9 CPU, but there are plenty of discounts floating around that lets you snag the gaming rig for hundreds of dollars less. If you want to slash more off the price tag, consider getting a configuration with a Core i7 CPU.

The ROG Zephyrus M16's battery life is solid for a gaming laptop, serving up 6 hours and 34 minutes of untethered runtime. However, if you're looking for a laptop that truly knocked our socks off in terms of battery life, consider the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which is the next laptop on this list.

Best Battery Life for Gaming

The Asus ROG Flow X16 is a laptop that beats all odds. It's a gaming laptop stuffed with up to an RTX 3070 Ti GPU, a touchscreen display, and more powerful components, and still, it managed to last a whopping 7 hours on a charge. That's pretty darn good for a gaming laptop! The average gaming laptop can barely last more than 5 hours.

The Asus ROG Flow X16 also offers a drop-dead gorgeous display, impressive gaming performance, a sleek and convertible form factor, and best of all, quiet fans! Ahh, no more jet engine sounds while you're putting the laptop through strenuous tasks. Win! One downside you should consider, though, is that this laptop tends to heat up quickly.

Best Dual-Screen Display

The Asus ZenBook Pro 14 Duo, among other avante-garde laptops in Asus' portfolio, is the reason why Asus is ranked as the world's most innovative laptop brand. The ZenBook Pro Duo brings you not one, but two displays. The main display is a 14.5-inch, 2.8K vivid stunner. The secondary display (i.e. ScreenPad Plus) is another OLED visual treat. Coupled with the main display, it's a match made in heaven for fast-moving multitaskers who benefit from having two screens.

We were also impressed by the ZenBook Pro 14 Duo's gaming performance on our testing. As such, the ZenBook Pro Duo is ideal for users who have heavy-duty workloads and benefit from having dual screens at their disposal, but after plugging away, they can dive into an immersive, smooth-sailing gaming session.

The Asus ProArt StudioBook 15 is for professional content creators who need a mean, lean, high-productivity machine to materialize their ideas into masterpieces.

Best Battery Life

The Asus ExpertBook B9450 lands on our best Asus laptops list because its battery life blew us away with a record-setting runtime of 16 hours and 42 minutes. We were so surprised, we asked our battery-life lab tester to rerun the test, but the Asus ExpertBook B9450 removed our skepticism and doubt by lasting another 16 hours. 

Carrying the Asus ExpertBook B9450 around, whether you're a commuter or a frequent flyer, will be like carrying a feather. The lightweight Asus ExpertBook B9450, having a dimension of 12.6 x 8 x 0.6 inches, weighs just 2.2 pounds.

Most Innovative Touchpad

If you're looking for a multitasking beast, look no further than the Asus ZenBook 13. With a touchpad that doubles as a second, small display, you can multitask to your heart's desire. Students, for example, can watch an online lecture on their touchpad while taking notes on Microsoft Word on their main display. Business users can plug away at an assignment while listening to the Spotify app that they've pulled up on their touchpad.

Best AMD Laptop

On the Geekbench 5 overall performance test, the VivoBook Flip 14 reached a jaw-dropping 5,294, which smoked the average mainstream laptop score (3,573). The VivoBook Flip 14 shouted “eat my dust!” to the Acer Swift 3 (4,862) and the HP Envy x360 13 (4,617) — both share the same CPU and RAM as their Asus rival.

On the HandBrake benchmark, the VivoBook Flip 14 transcoded a 4K video to 1080p in 10 minutes and 17 seconds, which is twice as fast as the category average (21:25). The Acer Swift 3 was about a minute slower (11:00). The HP Envy x360 13 hung its head in shame with its third-place time of 13 minutes and 44 seconds.

Best handheld

Right now, you're probably wondering: "Wait, that's not a laptop," but it simply brings us to the point we're trying to drive home: For many people, the Asus ROG Ally is a better choice than purchasing a gaming laptop. You get superb performance in your palms, with the hardware boasting a 3.3-GHz AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB NVMe M.2 2230 SSD and AMD Radeon Graphics RDNA 3 with 4GB of VRAM.

But that's not what makes this thing truly special. As our reviewer Sherri L. Smith puts so elegantly, "the Ally is a gaming laptop in handheld’s clothing." How to choose the best Asus laptop for you

Do your intensive daily workloads require more RAM than the average Joe? Are you a video editor who needs extra storage? Are you a gamer who wants a powerful GPU? Sorting through the best Asus laptops to fit your lifestyle is a tricky business.

To make your shopping process a little easier, our Editor-in-Chief Sherri L. Smith has put together some tried-and-true guidelines to help you choose the best laptop.

Budget: What you get for the money.

You can find decent Windows laptops and high-quality Chromebooks for under $500. However, better mainstream laptops usually cost more than $700 and premium Ultrabooks can run over $1,000. The best gaming laptops can cost $2.000 and up, but you can play the latest titles at decent frame rates on gaming laptops under $1,000.

Screen Size: 12 to 14 inches for Portability

Knowing a laptop's screen size tells you a lot about its portability overall. If you want to use your computer on your lap or carry it around a lot, go for one with a 12, 13 or 14-inch display. If you want to use the computer on tables and desks and won't carry it around much, a 15-inch model may give you more value. Some gaming rigs, media machines and workstations even have 17 or 18-inch screens, but those are hardest to carry.

2-in-1 or Clamshell?

More and more of today's laptops are 2-in-1s with screens that either bend back 360 degrees or detach so you can use them as tablets. If you like the idea of using your laptop in slate mode for drawing, media consumption or just using it standing up, a 2-in-1 could be for you. However, you can often get better features or a lower price by going with a traditional clamshell-style laptop.

Battery Life: 8+ Hours for Portability

Unless you only plan to use your laptop on your desk, battery life matters. Even within the home or office, having plenty of juice enables you to work on the couch or at the conference table, without being chained to the nearest outlet. For the best portability, we recommend getting a laptop that lasted over 8 hours on the Laptop Mag Battery Test. The longest-lasting laptops endure for over 10 hours.

Specs: 1080p / Core i5 / 8GB Are Best Bets

You can spend a lot of time delving into specs, but here are the key components to think about. If you just want really good mainstream performance, go for a Core i5 CPU, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a 1080p screen.

How We Test the Best Asus Laptops

We put each laptop through extensive benchmark testing — both synthetic and real-world — before they end up in the hands of our reviewers. We evaluate each aspect of the laptop, including its performance, battery life, display, speakers and heat management.

In our benchmark testing, we use a Klein K10 colorimeter to detect the brightness and sRGB color gamut of the laptop's display. For performance testing, we run the laptop through a gauntlet of benchmarks, including Geekbench 4.3 and 5.0 and 3DMark professional graphics tests. 

To determine real-world performance, we task the laptop to convert a 4K video to 1080p resolution and to duplicate a 4.97GB multimedia file. Our real-world graphics test is the Dirt 3 benchmark with medium settings at 1080p resolution.

We also run heat tests by playing a 15-minute full-screen video and measuring temperatures in different areas of the laptop. Last but not least, our battery test consists of continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. For MacBooks and premium Windows 10 laptops, a runtime of over 9 hours is considered a good result whereas gaming laptops and workstations that can stay powered for longer than 5 hours deserve praise.
